چکیده

In the scope of a scenario-based risk analysis, this study aims to quantify and rank various types of epistemic uncertainties that enter into the derivation of fragility functions for common buildings. Using a numerical model of a test structure (a reinforced concrete five-story building with infill panels on the first two floors), a first type of uncertainty is introduced, consisting of the mechanical properties of the materials (i.e. Young’s modulus and compressive strength for concrete, and Young’s modulus and yield strength for steel). The area of longitudinal reinforcement is also modified in the model, to generate various damage mechanisms for the same structure, depending on which floor first experiences failure. Finally, another source of epistemic uncertainty is studied, by comparing different types of fragility models: fragility curves derived from dynamic analyses and fragility functions generated from a capacity spectrum approach (i.e. use of a set of natural response spectra to identify a series of performance points from the capacity curve). To this end, a ranking of the importance of different sources of uncertainty in the vulnerability analysis (i.e. mechanical properties, structural models and fragility models) is conducted by computing, for each uncertainty source, the Sobol’ indices (i.e. the main effects and total effects of each source of uncertainty). This variancebased sensitivity technique presents the appealing features of both exploring the influence of input parameters over their whole range of variation and fully accounting for possible interactions between them. Nevertheless, addressing the issue of sensitivity to model uncertainty implies paying special attention to the appropriate treatment of different types of input parameters, i.e. continuous for mechanical properties or categorical in the case of fragility models. This is achieved by relying on recent advances in functional variance decomposition. For all these types of models, a uncertainty analysis in terms of the predicted number of damage buildings is carried out for a series of hypothetical scenarios.

Treating Uncertainties in a Nuclear Seismic Probabilistic Risk Assessment by Means of the Dempster-shafer Theory of Evidence

A Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Seismic Probabilistic Risk Assessment (SPRA) [1] aims at estimating the probability of occurrence of different sizes of earthquakes that may affect the NPP and assesses the NPP response to such earthquakes. The results of the assessment are presented in terms of seismically induced Core Damage Frequency (CDF) and Large Early Release Frequency (LERF). SPRA is a multi-...

Stock Evaluation under Mixed Uncertainties Using Robust DEA Model

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is one of the popular and applicable techniques for assessing and ranking the stocks or other financial assets. It should be noted that in the financial markets, most of the times, the inputs and outputs of DEA models are accompanied by uncertainty. Accordingly, in this paper, a novel Robust Data Envelopment Analysis (RDEA) model, which is capable to be used in t...

Effects of Magnitude Uncertainties on Seismic Hazard Estimates

The standard probability tree methodology of probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA) allows for the explicit treatment of many kinds of uncertainty. These include both epistemic uncertainty (e.g., uncertainty in the parameters of the frequency-magnitude relation for a given source region, and in the form and parameters of relations for attenuation of strong shaking) and aleatory uncertai...

Uncertainties in Seismic Hazard Analysis, High-Dimensional Visualization and Information Theory

Seismic hazard analysis, in particular in regions of low to moderate seismicity, is known to be subject to large amounts of uncertainties. According to their nature and origin, these can be classifi ed as either aleatory (describing intrinsic variabilities of processes) or epistemic (related to the lack of knowledge). Truely aleatory uncertainties are irreducible and will always be an indispens...

PERFORMANCE BASED DESIGN OPTIMIZATION OF STEEL MOMENT RESISTING FRAMES INCORPORATING SEISMIC DEMAND AND CONNECTION PARAMETERS UNCERTAINTIES

One of the most important problems discussed recently in structural engineering is the structural reliability analysis considering uncertainties. To have an efficient optimization process for designing a safe structure, firstly it is required to study the effects of uncertainties on the seismic performance of structure and then incorporate these effects on the optimization process. In this stud...
